The Backlot 03:58
Showing up and knowing no one,  The debutantes with big sunglasses on, Breeze by hand in hand so I, oh I, Dream that I’m back in my car, Leaving the gates where the private estates are, My headlights a wisp through the night so dark, So dark, so dark, so dark. (C) I don’t know what came along and tricked me into believing, That you’re the only one for me, Up to Griffith Park where I can see how the backlot mirrors a cemetery, And I don’t know why I’m here at all. Back at the party while I pine away, The social whirl without the mystery, Leaves me hopeless without your love,  And though the crowd’s dressed to the nines, The dust still blows ‘round their antique cars down the drive, And wild things still grow along the 405 all night, All night, all night, all night.
3.
Not tonight, I bring my hand to my face, Something is happening 'cross town without me again, Sad eyes get me nowhere, And no flashbulbs go off when I’m out on Friday nights, But that’s ok, I’ve got the reflection of the moon on the pool. (C) And darkened hallways and hidden doors,  But I have always wanted more, What’s so special about you boy? You’re going home empty-handed, You’re such a sad fool, this ain’t about you, This ain’t above love no more no, With the top down, hair blowing around, Hats flying off into the ocean. Waiting again in the lobby of the hotel, You will breeze through the door and the room will burst into song, That ain’t no desert light, that is LA, And no one cares or can see all the desperate things you do, And though nothing compares,  You must know I just don’t want to watch the wheels go round.
4.
Singing at your place up on the hill, With a little afternoon to kill, You don’t have to say nothing at all, But "take a tumble with me." And after I go out and straighten up, As if nothing has happened here, And never ever will again, As your gate swings at my back, (C) ‘Cause there’s no more time for love for me honey, You don’t have to say what you’re thinking, ‘Cause there’s no more time for love for me honey, You don’t have to say what you’re thinking, Like a wave breaking off shore it don’t care, What’s going on upstairs, yeah. I disappoint, at every turn and then I’m long gone, On a highway filled with cars and each one of them blares the same song, I’m well on my way to that. I wish it were all untrue and you didn’t know me the way you do, With no one next to me in the car, missing another noon rendezvous.
5.
Something’s happening in my heart, Feeling good in your car, The smog may rest in a hazy line, that’s fine, I see it play tricks with the light. Don’t know any other way, To show you how I feel, But there’s been a little turning deep inside, And I can’t hide it no, oh, So watch me go… (C) As I wind down to the bottom of the canyon, With every turn like a pop-up book, A despairing pink light floods the scene, I can’t help but wonder what I’ll ever mean to you, To you, To you, (Try so hard but what can I really do?) To you, To you, (You’re forever gentle on my mind) To you, To you, To you, (And it’s stoping me from all that I want) To you, to you, (At break of day what have I really got?) You let me stay at your place, And I’m swimming in your pool all the while, You’re off somewhere with, Someone so far from me, But you know I know how the story goes, But that don’t mean that it don’t hurt me no, oh, Well, who’s gonna show me the way when I’m all alone? So I make a drink and think about it, Pages from the script blow into the garden, And I can tell already that no one will understand, Still I hold course as planned, oh. And I’m growing tired of this kind of day-to-day, Feeling the pull in every way, Most times I don’t care what they say, But it still hurts to know that I’m all alone, In this dream place, in your house, with your things, Tell me do.
6.
Meet me in the hills, The starry hills, I need to disappear tonight, Away from klieg light, I know that this is wrong, I’ve known all along,  But come away, away with me tonight. There’s a hidden door, There are hidden halls, Though you stole the scene before, I still pick up the calls, And I’m going out of my head, Not knowing what to do, Now that everyone’s hanging around here but you. And I wanna know, What kind of love’s in store for me tonight? Yeah yeah yeah. Oh, you’ll find me in the hills, The starry hills, I need to disappear tonight, Away from city lights, We both know this is wrong, I’ve known all along, But come away, away with me tonight.

Rock's Dream 04:11

Said it’s been years, still got nowhere, Doin’ what’s expected of me, without a care, No one’s saving me now, Waiting for something to fulfill the fantasy for me, ah ha, No one’s saving me now, But there’s still a light in my eye (I wonder how long) ‘til it goes? What’s it gonna take? I'm doin’ what’s necessary, Show you just how hungry I am, With a new way of living by morning, No one’s saving me now, Keeping to myself all the day and all night long alone… No one’s saving me now, Gin-soaked swimming laps in the backyard pool, Splashing around. What it will take, making a clean break from all that I know, Ambling over to where the palm trees blow, And now in this dream place with no one around to entertain, Hear “you’re through” say it loud and there’s music playing, No more waiting for life to start. When you hear “you’re through”,  You can be sure you’re through.

The Mansion 03:44
The glow that fills the cafe,  Where aging movie stars, Drink coffee through late afternoons,  Near turned blue with talk of the old boulevard. And even by the time it gets dark, The air’s still warm and sweet blowing into the car, As you wind your way up the dark drives, Past mansion gates with the city’s twinkling never too far. (C) Though old Hollywood is over, To stand out on the balcony we hardly use, See past the pool and the palm trees down the canyon, With rolled out red carpet and lights so bright, Some sort of dream-place to go to at night, And watch the shadows play by the light, Thrown about the courtyard fountain. Thinking of the times when every day was my day, And to hardly notice the weather stripping that’s coming away, And the stray shingles and garden tools strewn about the yard, With a bit of sun hitting the banister I head down the hall. And oh, the parties we used to throw, Open the doors out to the terrace and patio, I still hear music swell and feel lantern light, When I’m home alone watching the awards show.
10.
Weave through the mob on Sunset, Clutching my things, The maddening crowd knows no bounds now, The evening sings. So I pick my side streets careful, And move through shadows, To the fountain in the park, I gaze up at the klieg lights… Oh woah woah. I do not know what it’s like, And I move in close, I picture your hat on the floor now, And hear the noise next door. If I came here to dance there’d be dancing, As tiny bubbles fill the air, And if the rain could come down, Tinseltown and I would just stand there. (C) Wish someone would care for me, (Well, don’t look now) Wish someone would care for me, (Well, don’t look now) How I wish someone would care for me, (Well, don’t look now) Wish someone would care for me, (Well, don’t look now) The scene is familiar to me now,  Distant music among the flowers, And these nerves are sure to pass, As I stay put and wait the hours. And in my secret life I know just where to go, Won’t you take me away, Never thought I would see this place now in morning light, As leaves blow along the beach,  Right where you last saw me, I’ve got no place special to be.
11.
When spending time away, Who knows where my heart goes? And one grand gesture, That could make me cry, Without asking you gave me time, Past orange and lemon groves, I think how much love I have inside, And how I’ll never know. Something’s got a hold on my heart, And it’s making it hard to do anything at all, So why you keep coming around? On some lazy afternoon I will find you, In the hills whistling a tune the sun about to set, As the Santa Ana winds blow in. (C) And it’s this thing that just won’t quit, And it’s the scenery that surrounds it, That makes me feel like going home, Under a low-slung moon’s soft glow.

about

On Sunset is the new record from songwriter Nicholas Krgovich, and it stands as a rich, widescreen paean to a lost Los Angeles. A smog-smudged dreamscape filled with loners, washed-up movie stars, dreamers, drifters, blooming jasmine and glowing courtyard pools, all twinkling and haunting the Hollywood Hills. A place where the light in late afternoon is bright and smooth, where the Santa Ana winds blow, where anything goes.

For over a decade, Krgovich has revealed himself to be a true pop polymath, building up an idiosyncratic and creatively restless discography. With projects such as No Kids, Gigi and P:ano—and collaborations with artists like Mount Eerie, Nite Jewel and Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors—it's fitting that his most fully realized and focused work yet bears his face on the cover and his full name on the spine. In some ways, On Sunset is like a debut from someone who's long been in the game, darting around in shadows, now descending a spiral staircase, ready for his close-up.

Produced and mixed by John Collins (Destroyer, New Pornographers) and recorded by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Cave Singers), the album is a sweeping Technicolor extravaganza. Its cinematic arrangements, penned by composer Stefan Udell, nod to Mahler as often as Quincey Jones, and are performed by an impressive list of guest musicians and singers. In the tradition of experimental music masquerading as pop (Avalon, Cupid & Psyche '85, Steve McQueen), On Sunset is a lonely, glamorous, late-night answer to a city's seductive and endless sprawl; the long shadows of palm trees on the red carpet; being lost in a place where everything is happening, where people are dreaming and making things that capture the world’s attention. It's the childhood memory of staying up late with blankets on the couch, watching Jack Palance do pushups on the Academy Awards. It's the sound of an artist wanting to share their world but paradoxically building it out of the land of artifice and make-believe. A hat flying off into the ocean. Get in.
